In an interview with Polygon, Bungie goes into more detail on how the new finishing moves work for Destiny 2. Finishers are new combat system that allows Guardians to smash targets with their fists as a Titan or slash them with their knives as a Hunter. Finishers were revealed as part of the next expansion, Shadowkeep coming September 17 for the PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Stadia.
During the interview, franchise director Luke Smith explained how finishers work: “When enemies get below a certain health threshold, they’re going to have an indicator that means they can be finished.” Mods can be added to finishing moves to enhance them. These mods will work in exchange for leaving yourself open while performing the move and Super energy. Mods will create unique effects for the finishers such as generating ammunition for the Fireteam after performing a finishing move. Smith said: “the mod for your finisher will be one of the slots on another piece of armor.” General manager Mark Noseworthy said: “we thought of it as combat emotes.” Players will be able to earn finishing moves the same as they do with emotes, through the store or completing an in-game challenge. Mods are only earned by playing Destiny 2. Smith added: “At launch, you’ll only be able to equip one finisher, but we are working hard on multi-equip for them.
Both Luke Smith and Mark Noseworthy stressed that the system is still in development and changes may be made which means that finishing moves could work differently than what they described. Shadowfall wasn’t the only thing that Bungie announced during their recent Vidoc. In addition to the new finishing moves combat system, Bungie detailed major changes that will be coming to Armor, as well as announcing a new free-to-play version of Destiny 2. The game is also getting cross-save support. It was also revealed that Destiny 2 will be available on the new streaming platform Stadia when it releases.
