Bloodroots Is A Beautifully Crafted Game Of Revenge

Indiecade 2019 ended yesterday after showing off a number of interesting games. The convention had a myriad of interesting games from a rythm beat roller derby game, to a game about being the last human cab driver in a city, and a game that was a mixture of Pacman and Kirby. Indiecade had a lot to offer. One of the games that I managed to get a chance to try out is Bloodroots.

Bloodroots is a beat-em-up action game being developed by Paper Cult, an indie video game company from Montreal. The company concentrates on fast-paced action games and has currently created one other game, Fat Mask. Bloodroots has the player fights enemies in quest for vengeance against the person who literally stabbed the protagonist in the back. The game description on the Indiecade page states, “Betrayed and left for dead, Mr. Wolf is hell-bent on finding his killer and enacting revenge – alone, and vastly outnumbered.” The protagonist, Mr. Wolf must cleave his way through numerous fields of enemies using a number of obvious weapons, and a number of less obvious weapons to reach his attempted murderer. The player must time their strikes perfectly or else risk being sent back to the start of the stage. The player can use a myriad of weapons such as an Axe to chop their way to the top, or a sword to slice their way to victory.

In my playthrough of the demo, I was able to whack enemies with a fence post, as well as launch myself into the sky by using the recoil of a cannon. The demo was very enjoyable with a suprisingly interactive worldspace, certain objects that I thought were decoration were actually weapons. I could hit enemies with a rubber ducky and a bushel of hay. Players can subscribe to check out the demo at the Bloodroots website. The game will eventually release for PC, Nintendo Switch, and PS4.
