Blizzard’s Overwatch Trademark Suspended

Blizzard Entertainment has run into trouble with one of their latest games, Overwatch. The game which is still in development was revealed last year at BlizzCon and recently had it’s trademark suspended this past Saturday.

According to notices posted by the United States Patent of Trademark Offices (USPTO), the cause behind the suspension stems from the “likelihood of confusion” between Blizzard and mobile developer Innovis Lab’s app of the same name. The mobile app was “inspired by classic first person shooter video games to bring you enhanced airsoft, paintball, and first person shooter game play,” as stated by their website. There is also a conflict between when both trademarks were filed. The trademark filed by Blizzard was preceded by Innovis Labs application. Blizzard has the opportunity to appeal the suspension, but no indication of such action has been made by the developer. There is a strong chance that Blizzard’s Overwatch will need to be completely rebranded, pending the outcome of the investigation but no official word has been given.

Overwatch is an online multiplayer first person shooter game that emphasizes co-op gameplay. An open beta was scheduled for release early this year, but considering the circumstances players can expect a delay in the initial launch.
