While BlizzCon has been one of the most beloved events from the company, it seems that it will be skipping over 2024. The announcement came early Thursday afternoon in a update regarding Blizzard Entertainment’s live events for this year.
According to the company, while there washing an exact reason as to why they were cancelling the convention, Blizzard noted that the decision to cancel “didn’t come lightly.”
BlizzCon 2024’s cancellation has been seen as an unfortunate decision by many, considering BlizzCon 2023 was the first event in nearly four-years since the COVID-19 pandemic began.
That said with the recent layoffs that have hit the company, alongside its troubles during and following it’s merger with Microsoft, BlizzCon’s cancellation may not be that much of a stretch.
Regardless, Blizzard shared some information on other upcoming live events that fans can participate in. Those live events include appearances at other industry events like Gamescom, the Overwatch Champions Series, and in-person events for the 30th anniversary of World of Warcraft. Additionally, Blizzard also noted that they’ll be participating in other “several live-streamed industry events” to share updates on their IP.
“…While these events are distinct from BlizzCon, we’re harnessing all of our creativity and imagination to ensure that they carry the same spirit of celebration and togetherness.” Blizzard wrote.
Regardless, BlizzCon’s absence in 2024 doesn’t mean the convention is gone for good. While nothing is confirmed, Blizzard noted that the convention will be coming back sometime in the future. The exact year is still unknown, but it wouldn’t be too much of a stretch to assume BlizzCon’s returning as early as next year.
