Terry Garrett began his long, long journey to play through Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time back in 2011, and completed his arduous task a few days ago on January 2nd, 2016. That’s five years. Five years worth of gameplay.
The reason Terry Garrett bided his time for so long is simply because he could not use sight to complete the game–Garrett was blinded over fifteen years ago. Instead, he uses a clever combination of sound and some experimentation. Garrett has previously proven his methods with playthrough of Oddworld: Abe’s Exoddus, almost how a pianist can replicate a song by ear alone.Having studied engineering at the University of Colorado, it is invigorating to watch this dedicated gamer discern where sounds are coming from using speakers situated directly in front of him, on both the right and left. Below we can watch Garrett display his unique method in a video he provided on his Youtube channel:
When it comes to a game as expansive as Ocarina, however, Garrett had a hell of a task laid ahead of him. Navigating his way through Hyrules’ spacious tyrian, Garrett proved his spacial awareness as well as utilizing advice from helpful fans.
The fruits of Garrett’s several year struggle all boiled down to his fateful fight against Gannon, which can be seen in the video below.
Garrett’s full play of the game can be view on his Youtube Channel.
Garrett went on to thank all of his fans in his Youtube description after the victory, rejoicing in the hard earned accomplishment he made after five years effort:
It has been long in the making, but I have finally accomplished my goal! Who knows what is next! Thanks for all those who have stuck with me through this series even after it seemed like I was giving up.
It remains currently unknown which game Garrett will tackle next, but nevertheless, it is bracingly heartwarming to watch someone who refused to give up his wonder and sense of adventure in the world of gaming.
Great job, Terry!!
