Following the reveal of the first trailer for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, an industry insider reported that development for a Black Panther video game is underway. Since the hero’s film debut in Captain America: Civil War and his titular film Black Panther, the leader of Wakanda has become one of Marvel’s most popular characters. Marvel’s Spider-Man took video game fans by storm, so it shouldn’t be surprising that Marvel would try the single-player game treatment on another of their characters. Jeff Grubb, a video-game reporter for Giant Bomb, announced the development on a recent twitch stream and shared new details on the untitled project.
According to Grubb, the upcoming Black Panther game is under the code name Project Rainier and is very early in development. It will be a single-player, open-world RPG, following the player character’s journey into becoming the new Black Panther. Project Rainier will be developed by a new unnamed Seattle-based studio led by ex-Monolith Vice President Kevin Stephens and will be published by Electronic Arts. While it is still unclear how they will correlate with each other, Grubb teased that this upcoming game will have connections with Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.

Project Rainier seems to be a great departure from EA’s focus on live service games with many fans having a hard hard time forgetting EA’s recent controversial tweets regarding single-player games. However, according to Grubb, EA may be trying to recreate the same success seen in their previous single-player game Star Wars: Jedi Fallen Order. Speculation is up in the air whether the main character for the game will be T’Challa or a custom player character, regardless the game is reportedly only in the early stages of development. Nothing is certain, and fans who are curious for more information will have to wait and see for future developments from the developers in the future.
