Call of Duty is expanding its battle royale offerings with a fresh mode called Black Ops Royale, announced by Treyarch and Activision as part of the ongoing evolution of Warzone. This new experience draws inspiration from one of the franchise’s earliest ventures into the genre Black Ops 4’s Blackout, but reimagines it within Warzone’s modern framework rather than simply remaking it.
According the official Call of Duty website the Black Ops Royale retains several trademarks of the original Blackout feel, including realistic weapon handling, bullet drop, an armor system, and the use of trauma kits, blending them with Warzone’s current gameplay sensibilities. According to the developers, the goal was to evoke the pacing and combat rhythm that longtime fans remember, while still feeling fresh and cohesive with the rest of Warzone’s modes.
In this mode, up to 100 players drop in as part of 25 squads, but unlike traditional Warzone matches, there are no preselected loadouts, no gulag mechanic, and no buy stations. Instead, players must scavenge for weapons and gear scattered across the map. Equipment is found as fixed archetypes that can be upgraded along five attachment tiers, with higher rarities unlocking more powerful preset builds.
Black Ops Royale is set on the enormous Avalon map, which originally appeared in Black Ops 7’s Endgame mode and now serves as a central battleground in Warzone. For this mode, Treyarch modified Avalon to reduce large bodies of water and add better-connected terrain, encouraging more dynamic combat across land, sea, and air.
The mode also brings back classic Blackout-style gear such as grappling hooks, sensor darts, and trauma kits, along with other tools typical of battle royale play. Players can use killstreaks and a tiered armor system familiar to Warzone veterans, and instead of fixed Perk slots, they’ll carry a selection of five consumable boosts that can be swapped at any time to adapt to changing situations.
In addition to simply outlasting opponents, Black Ops Royale includes optional objectives like hunting bounties, capturing relays, cracking strongboxes, and breaching guild defenses, all of which can yield valuable rewards and tactical advantages during a match.
Black Ops Royale is set to launch on March 13, 2026, and will arrive as part of Warzone’s Season 2 Reloaded content updates. Fans looking for a deeper breakdown of the Season 2 roadmap can expect more details in future announcements from the developers.
