Beyond: Two Souls – textbook example why you shouldn’t judge a game by its score

If you’re like me, you scroll to the bottom of the page to view the score before ever reading a word explaining why that score was given. In the past, you may have been able to justify this, but with the complexity of games today you’re doing yourself a disservice. Do your research and find an editor/writer you trust. Beyond: Two Souls is a perfect example as to why you should do this.

Beyond: Two Souls, Quantic Dreams follow up to Heavy Rain, released today. It’s arguably one of the most anticipated PlayStation 3 titles of the year. Under the guidance of such a talented team one would expect nothing less than solid scores across the board. Well, it’s been anything but that.

As of this afternoon, Beyond: Two Souls is averaging 74.93% from 35 reviews, according to gamerankings. What’s most striking is the lack of balance from those reviews. Just over half of the scores are 80% and above (one perfect score), with a surprising 8 out of 35 scores at 60% and below, making it easily the most polarizing AAA game in recent memory.

What’s unfortunate for Qauntic Dream is an opportunity for gamers to change their impulsive habit of judging a book by its cover. IGN’s Greg Miller put it best:

Now is the best time for gamers! You have so many options available to you. Don’t be that person that only reads one source. Do yourself a favor and find an author who shares your interests. You, and the industry, will be better for it.
