Free-to-play interactive music video game (MVG) The Wombats: Official Game developed by Be-Games, has recently launched for mobile devices. The mobile game similar to the mechanics of Subway Surfers and Temple Run is inspired by The UK band’s music video This Car Drives All by Itself and is meant to celebrate their first-ever Official Charts UK #1 album. Bringing their music into an interactable mobile game format will further raise support for The Wombats, as the gaming industry is now larger than the film and music industries combined.
The Wombats: Official Game throws players into the streets of London on a three-lane track of dodging pedestrians and dangerous hazards as they race to the finish. Other maps can be unlocked as the game progresses, as there does not appear to be in-game purchases. As long as the player does not crash to restart the level, official music featuring This Car Drives All by Itself plays in the background. The first race track itself takes direct inspiration from the official music video, where 3 children race miniature cars on a toy race track. A player’s racer can be one of three bandmates to choose from; Matthew Murphy ‘Murph’, Dan Haggis ‘Dan’, and Tord Øverland Knudsen ‘TORD’.
“Be-Games are pioneering MVGs to offer fans and artists the best of both worlds. A playable music video on the App Stores opens up an ever growing mobile gaming space which boasted over 2.6billion players last year,” said CEO & Co-Founder of Be-Games Jam Allison. The Wombats: Official Game is Be-Game’s first release with more on the way. Be-Games is a mobile games & NFTs focused development studio under parent company Be-Hookd Digital.
Be-Hookd is a multi-award-winning digital agency trusted by prominent artists and brands around the globe. Be-Hookd’s mission is to create social-first strategies with real-world impact, helping their brands and talent navigate the intersection of technology, creative media and culture. With Be-Games, their first stop was presenting a simple MVG to intertwine the 2 worlds of music and video games.
This is not The Wombat’s first initiative into the digital realm. The indie rock band had recently launched a successful NFT/ Metaverse experience via Sandbox. This along with the MVG is just another step into campaigning their album and allowing fans to directly interact with their music.
