In 2009, the first Bayonetta game was a surprise success, with players blown away by new IP that they had no idea what to expect from. In 2014, the second Bayonetta was dropped as a Wii U exclusive with little build-up of anticipation. The surprise behind the release of the third game will be very different however, in fact, as of now, most people are just surprised to hear that it is still being made.
Not to say that fans aren’t excited about the upcoming game, in fact they are very excited, but since Platinum Games boss Hideki Kamiya announced Bayonetta 3 in 2017 at the game awards fans have heard next to nothing about the game. A release date has yet to be announced, there have been no new trailers, nothing. Fans were only given an announcement trailer, and for context, this trailer released at the same time as the first Death Stranding trailer.
Needless to say, this has led to rampant speculation over the past few years that the upcoming Switch-exclusive had actually been canceled, especially since Platinum has been working on several other games in the meantime. When asked about this in a recent interview with Video Games Chronicle however, Kamiya had this to say:
I’m on Twitter so I see a lot of comments every day. I’m happy that there’s still anticipation for the title, but one thing I would like to address is the trend I’m seeing which is people who are starting to ask if the game has been cancelled. I want you guys to take any concerns you have like that and throw them out the window immediately because we’re still hard at work on it and it hasn’t been cancelled by any means. Please look forward to it!
This is about as clear of an answer as possible – Bayonetta 3 will not be canceled. No release date has been announced, but the game will be coming to the Switch… at some point.
