Ever want to explore space? Ever want to explore what’s underneath the 25 kilometer thick ice layer on Jupiter’s planet Europa? Now you can! In a sense. Developers Fake Fish and Undertow Games have been working on their newest title Barotrauma for some time since 2018. It had only hit the Alpha testing stage in January of this year. But there’s good news! Barotrauma is officially coming out to the public in the next month for early access:
Barotrauma is described as an intense combination of Subnautica and Faster than Light with some cool underwater space monsters. But the plot is simple enough: Humanity has taken to space, reaching out to different planets in hopes of a new life. Europa, one of Jupiter’s moons, is one of these destinations. Players take on the role of a captain of one of the submarine’s to adventure out into the dark depths beneath Europa’s ice layer. However, players will find that it’s not just the humans on the ships alive down there, and that there are other inhabitants on this moon.
Players can choose from a set of classes to play as; submarine captain, engineer, mechanic, medic or security office. With this class they have to try and keep both their ship running and their crew alive. The submarine runs on several systems and it’ the players job to make sure that each of those systems is in check or catastrophe will happen very quickly. These systems range from nuclear reactors, sonar guns, and more.
Captain the submarine through dangerous terrain. Not just because of the ice and frozen obstacles, but because there are creatures that lurk below. Choose to fight them, or choose to run as to keep your supplies safe. There are other wrecked ships that players can discover to uncover hidden artifact that can be useful on their voyage.
Barotrauma also has a creative side, for both single and multi-player. As players can team up to take out the creatures of the deep, make their own games, or make their own monsters to share with others. The world is your oyster, and the sky’s the limit. Or… the thick wall of ice in this case.
Barotrauma will officially be in Early Access on June 5, 2019. Check out their Steam for more info.
