A day after we had just said that Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat had major news lately while Tekken seemed to be going under the radar, now it looks like Bandai Namco have finally decided to move forward with the news for the latest entry in their flagship fighting game, Tekken 8. On Tekken’s official Twitter account they have announced that there will be an announcement later this winter for Tekken 8.

This can mainly be construed as a word of caution for those watching the Tekken World Tour Global Finals, as many players both competitive and casual watch these events in anticipation of hype trailers for new characters and stages, so this tweet can largely be taken as a warning that those things won’t be appearing at the Tekken World Tour Global Finals (and to please not spam the chat asking for them).
But there is a large contingent of fans who have deduced that “later this winter” means that Bandai Namco are gearing up to instead show off their latest trailers to a much bigger audience, namely, at Geoff Keighley’s Game Awards on December 12th. Naturally, such a large audience demands a large announcement, and thus many fans speculate that this next trailer will be for the next season of Tekken 8, likely the entire cast of DLC characters for that season, and likely including some pretty big guest characters for maximum impact.
But this is, again, just speculation, and likely this tweet was sent out mainly to tell fans not to boo when the Tekken World Tour Global Finals ends and there is no trailer for anything in the future. Still, hype culture marches on, and Tekken fans will be watching the Game Awards fingers crossed for Kiryu Kazama, Tifa, or Sub-Zero to show up for the next season of the King of the Iron Fist Tournament.
