Developed by Kenny Sun and published by Devolver Digital, BALL x PIT is a fantasy roguelite with its main focus being on firing various balls to clear waves of enemies. Although that mechanic doesn’t sound very unique upon introduction, marketing for the game has revealed the care that went into making that simple formula as expansive as it could be. In particular, the release trailer denoting the game’s availability is adamant about showing just how many features the game has to offer.

In accordance with the almost excessive ball puns in the game, BALL x PIT is set following the fall of Ballbylon, where all that remains of the great city is pit. Players are tasked with recruiting heroes in search of the lost treasure of Ballbylon. They will need to fight through the waves of enemies spawned from the dangerous pit on their way down the chasm and may eventually gain the ability to rebuild the city as New Ballbylon.

The story of the game is basic, acting as a shell for the gameplay that the release trailer focuses on. At its core, BALL x PIT sees players firing balls at different angles to clear waves of enemies. The trailer’s narrator is quickly shown to be different from most narrators, obsessing over the vast array of balls in the game. The full release sports over 60 unique balls which can be found in a variety of ways, and each come with special properties to change how they interact with the enemies and walls. These ways include combining and upgrading existing balls, sometimes multiple times in a row. In addition to the ball-collecting aspect, the game also lets players construct buildings and unlock new characters, each of which can influence playstyles by granting buffs to players. At this point in the trailer, the narrator loses control and his obsession for the game takes over, serving as both an endorsement and potential warning for players.

Ball x Pit is available on the original Switch, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, and Steam, with the game becoming available on Switch 2 later this fall.
