Baldur’s Gate 3, Larian Studio’s DND-inspired role-playing game, is still in early access, but that’s not to say that the game isn’t constantly improving and expanding. Most recently, Larian has announced the fifth patch for the game and some of the features it will be bringing.
In the past, players have expressed frustration with the in-game dice rolls, claiming that the random elements in Baldur’s Gate 3 feel a bit too out of the player’s control. This concern has been addressed via the “Active Roll System” being introduced to the game. With this system, players will be able to use spells and skills to affect the outcome of random rolls. The system is also prominently displayed in the game’s UI instead of being hidden behind the scenes, so if players fail their roles, at least they’ll be able to see why.
The game is also adding “Background Goals,” which act like smaller objectives and bonuses offered to players who role-play their characters well. They’ll reward heroic players for doing good deeds and villainous ones for the opposite, which should go a long way towards getting players fully immersed in their roles in the world of Baldur’s Gate.
Baldur’s Gate 3 is also improving its camp system, which now requires players to collect food and other important materials before setting up camp for a long rest. This is designed to make players think critically about where and when they plan to hunker down. Long rests are extremely important to surviving in Baldur’s Gate 3 and will reward players with things like extra conversations with companions, special events, refilling important resources, and offering stat bonuses to well-rested party members. Finally, the backgrounds of campsites have been updated. Previously, players would be magically transported into a relatively mundane forest setting every time they made camp, but now the game has been updated with “every landmark as its own isolated location that can be accessed when you’re ready to hunker down for your long rest,” says Larian.
The enemy and companion AI will also be improving with Patch 5. Enemies will now act smarter, like picking up discarded weapons and healing each other with potions. Party member AI will reportedly also improve with the next patch. You can check out the most recent update trailer below.
The full patch notes will go live at the same time as the patch. Both will be available on July 13th.
