Are you a Fromsoft fan who misses the glory days of King’s Field? Or maybe an Elder Scrolls fan who misses Daggerfall? Then maybe Labyrinth of the Demon King from J. R. Hudepohl will be up your alley.
A dungeon crawler with a somewhat retro feel to it, as I said it really gives the feel of something like a King’s Field, where you’re in first person trying to survive horrific monstrosities with just your wits and, eventually, a sword. Labyrinth of the Demon King appears to be set in feudal Japan, with the main character brandishing katanas during the gameplay teaser and exploring desolate city streets with the classic Japanese architecture looming in the background.
This is J. R. Hudepohl’s first game, under the Top House Studios umbrella. It’s always fantastic to see indie developers finally release their vision into the world and it’s fantastic that Top House Studios is willing to publish them.
In an era where many AAA and even AA games tend to be found uninspired by many, indie games have taken up the slack given their modest budgets but high artistic integrity. Games such as MiSide and Mouthwashing have become absolute classics in just the past year alone, so anyone who wants to experience something unique in gaming should definitely keep an eye on the indie scene, and I believe that Labyrinth of the Demon King will truly be a memorable experience for anyone who picks it up. Have you seen the previews? It looks sick.
If you want to purchase Labyrinth of the Demon King you can do so right now on Steam as well as on GOG; it’s available for a slight 20% discount at time of writing so be sure to check it out if you can. If you want a console option you can also find it for Playstation 4 and Playstation 5 as well as the Nintendo Switch. And don’t forget to leave a review! Engagement of all sorts are the lifeblood of indie titles trying to break through the surface. If you enjoy your experience with Labyrinth of the Demon King a review is the best way to make sure that others see it as well!
