Last month’s EVO France saw the worldwide announcement of Avatar Legends: The Fighting Game, an exciting take on the iconic Avatar: The Last Airbender series given a flashy, competitive coat of paint. With the Last Airbender series being relatively unfamiliar to video game releases of this quality, much less a fighting game of this scale, fan excitement is understandably high. After EVO France concluded, further news about the game’s status was shared, with an announcement from fighting game legend and Avatar Legends community ambassador Justin Wong about a closed alpha play test planned for December 5. That being said, today we have received yet another exciting look at Avatar Legends: The Fighting Game’s internal workings via an official controls 101 overview trailer posted to the Avatar_Fighters YouTube channel.
As detailed in the controls 101 trailer, Avatar Legends: The Fighting Game is a four-button, movement-heavy fighting game that uses a modified version of Street Fighter’s classic light, medium, and heavy attack control scheme by removing the distinction between individual punch and kick buttons for simplicity’s sake. Thanks to this, Avatar Legends can retain its simpler four-button control scheme, with its fourth button serving as a dedicated movement option, called “Flow stance”. Avatar Legends is described as a heavily movement-based fighting game, and the short gameplay showcased at the end of the controls 101 trailer perfectly demonstrates that core mechanic. Characters of all bending types take advantage of their flow stance to chain various high-flying movement options into classic shoto fighter juggle combos. This emphasis on simplicity in the game’s core mechanics should bring hope to fighting game fans and newcomers alike, as anyone can pick up and play. In making this decision, Avatar Legends’ development team has effectively mitigated the fighting game genre’s greatest drawback: the often-incredibly steep learning curve and high knowledge requirement.
Gamers will have the chance to get their hands on Avatar Legends: The Fighting Game during the game’s closed alpha playtest, planned to run from December 5 to 7. Playtest sign-ups for select PC gamers via Steam are available here; however, the playtest is unfortunately only available to gamers in the Americas. The sign-up period will close alongside the beginning of the playtest period on December 5.
