Today gaming icon Atari has announced that their new hybrid console the Atari VCS will be releasing later this month on June 15. This console is able to both function as a traditional home gaming console and switch into a fully functioning PC capable of supporting Windows, Ubuntu Linux, and Chrome OS operating systems.
While in its Atari mode, the Atari VCS offers many of the same features of a traditional home console. Each console comes with Atari VCS Vault, which is a collection of a hundred classic Atari Arcade and 2600 games. Players are able to download more games off of the Atari game store, or import their own library of games through PC mode. The console also allows players to access many of their favorite TV and music streaming services such as Netflix, HBO Max, Hulu, Spotify, and Pandora. Both a wireless classic joystick controller, and a wireless modern controller will be available for the console.
The PC mode of the Atari VCS gives players a customizable and upgradable PC experience. Through this mode players are able to access retro game emulation platforms, and existing PC game libraries. Through the inclusion of a M.2 SSD socket and standard SODIMM memory units, advanced PC hobbyists are able to upgrade and modify their console just like a regular PC.
The Atari VCS will release and be available for purchase starting June 15. The console will be available through a number of different retailers such as Game Stop, Best Buy, Micro Center, and the official Atari VCS Website. Those who are interested in the console are currently able to preorder it on the official Atari VCS Website.
