Atari & PLAION Have Revealed The Latest Addition To The Atari+ Platform, The Atari 7800+

The Atari 7800+ is a faithful recreation of the Atari home console that was originally released back in 1986. It’s a scaled-down, compact edition of the console that seamlessly integrates into modern living spaces. The Atari 7800+ will be equipped with HDMI connectivity and will effortlessly link to contemporary TVs and devices. Each console will come with the new CX78+ Wireless Gamepad and a brand new title, Bentley Bear’s Crystal Quest, a sequel to the classic Crystal Castles.

The Atari 7800+ will play both Atari 2600 and 7800 game cartridges. It will also have near-perfect compatibility with original and third-party Atari games. The console will include the new Wireless CX78+ Gamepad, a widescreen or 4:3 window size option, and a USB-C charging cable.

The CX78+ Wireless Gamepad isn’t the only controller being added to the new console. Atari also announced the CX40+ Wireless Joystick.

The Gamepad is a recreation of the original controller with its radical two-button setup. It will also feature a directional D-pad and a removable thumbstick. The Wireless Joystick introduces untethered one-button gaming as an authentic recreation of the original CX40. Both controllers work with the original 2600 and 7800 hardware using the included DB9 wireless adapter and are able to connect to PC with the included USB-C adapter.

In addition to the release of the Atari 7800+, Atari also announced ten new game cartridges including official Atari releases for popular homebrew games and three multi-game 2600+ cartridges. Every new game will include a color-printed user manual and will be available for $29.99  (€29.99 / £24.99).

The new 7800+ cartridges include Asteroids Deluxe, Bounty Bob Strikes Back, Bentley Bear’s Crystal Quest, Berzerk, Frenzy, and Space Duel. The new 2600+ cartridges include Caverns of Mars; The Epyx Game Collection puts together the best EPYX sports games into one cartridge; The M Network Collection puts together Armor Ambush, Astroblast, Frogs and Flies, and Star Strike onto one cartridge; The RealSports Collection brings together RealSports Baseball, Football, Volleyball, Soccer, Tennis, Boxing, and the never-before-released RealSports Basketball.

“Expanding the Atari+ platform with new games, new wireless controllers, and the 7800+ console is a perfect follow-up to last year’s successful launch of the Atari 2600+,” said Wade Rosen, Chairman and CEO of Atari.
