Astro Bot Becomes 2024’s Top-Rated Standalone Game on Metacritic

Astro Bot currently holds an impressive Metacritic score of 94, based on over 100 critic reviews. This high rating has positioned it as the highest-rated standalone game of the year. However, while it has received widespread acclaim, it narrowly misses out on surpassing Elden Ring’s DLC, Shadow of the Erdtree, which currently maintains an even higher score of 95.

This year, the competition for top Metacritic ratings has been fierce, especially among PlayStation 5 exclusives. Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, another major PS5 release, holds a strong position just below Astro Bot with a score of 92. Meanwhile, indie titles Animal Well and Balatro are also making waves, with scores of 91 and 90, respectively, showcasing a diverse and high-quality lineup for gamers this year.

Among the many reviews praising Astro Bot, one of the most notable comes from VGC, which hailed the game as “the best 3D platformer of the decade.” In its glowing review, VGC described Astro Bot as “relentlessly joyous” and emphasized its world-class soundtrack as a standout feature that enhances the overall experience. The publication also highlighted how the game masterfully integrates PlayStation’s legacy characters into its narrative, ensuring it appeals to both new players and long-time fans of the platform. This thoughtful blend of nostalgia and innovation is a testament to the craftsmanship of Team Asobi, the developer behind the game.

What has genuinely resonated with many critics is the care and respect Team Asobi has shown toward PlayStation’s beloved characters. While Astro Bot offers a fresh and innovative platforming experience, it also pays homage to the history of PlayStation by treating its iconic characters with reverence. A delightful surprise in the game is that Bloodborne characters are included, marking their first appearance in a native PlayStation 5 game. This nod to the Bloodborne fanbase adds depth and excitement for players who have followed the series.

After more than three years in development, Astro Bot is finally set to be released on Friday, September 6. Anticipation has been building, and given the overwhelmingly positive reception from critics, expectations for the game are incredibly high. Players are eager to experience the charm and innovation of Team Asobi’s latest creation.

Looking beyond the initial release, Astro Bot promises to deliver even more content for players post-launch. Team Asobi has confirmed downloadable content (DLC) plans, including new challenge levels and a speedrun mode. These additions will provide:

  • New ways for players to engage with the game.
  • Offering fresh challenges and opportunities to test their skills.
  • Ensuring Astro Bot remains a staple in the platforming genre long after its release.

VGC recently had the opportunity to visit Team Asobi’s studio, offering a unique inside look at the development process behind Astro Bot. This glimpse into the team’s creative process revealed the dedication to crafting the game and carefully considering the franchise’s history, setting the stage for what could be one of the most celebrated platformers of the modern era.
