Ubisoft has just released a new cinematic trailer for the upcoming Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey. More than ever, it’s looking like the latest entry in the Assassin’s Creed series is moving away from the formula that fans are used to. We already knew that the game is going to be more along the lines of The Witcher and BioWare games in terms of its player characters and quests. Now, with this new cinematic, we’ve also got a look at some of the more fantastical elements of Odyssey that haven’t been present in other games.
Namely, the trailer features a mythical Medusa as one of the enemies players will be able to battle. Traditionally, Assassin’s Creed has tried to be purely historical (with an order of assassins thrown into the mix). However, the game’s Creative Director, Jonathan Dumont, told USGamer that the presence of these fantastic creatures doesn’t necessarily mean that Assassin’s Creed is going full-on fantasy mode.
“These are small pockets that are lost somewhere in the world. There is a sort of a sub-plot with artifacts. Are you seeing a simulation within a simulation? What are you seeing?” Dumont said. “It’s real for Alexios, Kassandra, and that world. But what you are perceiving through that world with Layla, is that real?” So, it seems like mythological monsters might just be a matter of perspective after all. Still, Ubisoft appears to be trying something new and interesting with Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey. “History’s still our playground, as it is in every Assassin’s Creed,” Dumont added. “It’ll fit into everything that you’re used to, but in a different way.”
The game is also supposed to be “much longer” than the last entry, Origins. Here’s the recently dropped cinematic trailer from Gamescom 2018:
Assassin‘s Creed: Odyssey will release on October 5 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.
