This news comes from two sources at Ubisoft Singapore who wishes to remain anonymous who spoke with Kotaku this past week, revealing that the 2013 title remake is “still in its earliest stages and will not be complete for at least a few years.” Kotaku also notes that the Ubisoft Singapore studio led develpment of the game franchise’s ocean tech and naval combat since Assassin’s Creed 3. The studio will be “heavily involved in helping to modernize the Caribbean-based sailing game.”
Man the helm as Edward Kenway, the grandfather of Assassin’s Creed 3’s protagonist Conner Kenway, as you journey through the Caribbean during the Golden Age of Piracy in the early 1700s. On the game’s Steam page, “Pirates rule the Caribbean and have established their own lawless Republic where corruption, greediness and cruelty are commonplace… Welcome to the Golden Age of Piracy.” Regarded by many, Assassins Creed IV: Black Flag is the more memorable games of the franchise, with the story of Edward Kenway, exploring the Caribbean as a privateer/pirate as well as the ship mechanics. Kotaku ranks the game at #2, and users on the Assassin’s Creed subreddit, ranking it their personal top 5. One user, el_solari, says, “The story, the setting, the ship gameplay was amazing, exploring the world felt so good and I also really liked exploring the modern world.”
Ubisoft’s latest pirate title, Skull and Bones, which fans compare to Black Flag, has yet to be released since it was announced back in 2017, suffering delays in ‘development hell’. According to Kotaku, developers of Skull and Bones wanted turn the game back towards what Black Flag was stating, “a focus on co-op exploration and hand-to-hand combat rather than just resource gathering or player-vs.-player naval battles.” It was announced that the game had a release date back in November 2022 but the currently release date is sometime in 2023 with a closed beta test in August.
