The October edition of the Steam Next Fest has arrived. The PC event gives developers and publishers the chance to showcase new and upcoming IPs as special timed demos on the Steam platform. This also includes livestreams and being able to wish list the title of your choice after you’ve tried it. One of these titles is the grand return of an all-time classic, Arkanoid. The 1986 title is making a comeback, this time being developed by French developer Pastagames, and published by fellow French company Microids, and going with the new name Arkanoid: Eternal Battle.
Arkanoid: Eternal Battle is a complete reimagining of the original 1986 arcade classic that was developed by TAITO Corporation. For the most part, the core gameplay remains the same. The player takes control of a VAUS spacecraft and moves around the bottom of the screen in order to bounce a ball and destroy barriers to move forward. The game includes the original title, playing it as if you were back in 1986 at the arcades and a Neo Mode which gives it a much more modern style and art aesthetic.
However, the biggest addition to the title is the Eternal Battle mode. For the first time in the title’s history, up to 25 players can challenge each other in a unique battle royal mode. The players will all compete on their own screens, but one by one will be eliminated until one is left standing. It’s a very interesting take on a classic mechanic, and definitely something that has our attention. This Eternal Battle mode will be front and center for the title during the Steam Next Fest event, and we can’t wait to try it out over the next several days.
Arkanoid: Eternal Battle is slated to launch sometime in Fall 2022 for PC, the PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/Series S, and the Nintendo Switch.
