Developer BulletHell Studios has recently released a major update for their positively received game Archons. The update will be completely free, featuring a winter-themed endless level as a core feature, according to a press release.
The update has been eagerly awaited by players, particularly after the game’s unique mechanics that had players enthralled. The new winter-themed level includes wave after wave of enemies and new special type of enemy that creates persistent ice stains. These ice stains build up over time, which slowly turn the map into a deadlier and deadlier trap, forcing players to focus on those enemies.
The official Steam page notes that the level is incredibly tricky, but in exchange for surviving the level, players will be able to receive free in-game cosmetic items that haven’t yet been fully revealed. The original soundtrack for Archons, composed by Oliver Orand, was also released the same day for purchase on Steam for $5 USD.
Key features from Archons will also be carried into the new update, particularly the ability to control two characters as one player, one character in each hand. Weapons will remain upgradable to deal with the growing difficulty of each level. There are still a variety of build options, active and passive, as well as defensive or offensive, allowing players the flexibility to play differently and also ensuring each playthrough has a different effect.
It’s possible that the new update may offer new pieces of lore regarding why there’s a plague that’s growing on the alien planet where the game takes place. The game is still fully compatible with Co-op, but only locally, and different kinds of currencies can still be earned in the winter-themed endless level.
The developers have teased that there will be more added to the game on top of the music release that may be paid like their other major DLC updates.
