The massive success of Nintendo’s franchises on the original Switch console has led to more players of the Switch titles than any before. Now that the Switch 2 has released and has a limited selection of unique new games, those popular titles are still being considered and played by many fans. Thus, it comes as no surprise that Nintendo has only expanded their Switch 2 upgrades and updates to the games that could use it in the modern era. Animal Crossing: New Horizons looks to be getting one of the largest expansions yet with the release of both a Switch 2 version and a free update to both versions coming next year.
In the Nintendo reveal trailer, they show off the many strengths that upgrading to the Switch 2 has provided Animal Crossing: New Horizons. The most obvious change comes with the higher resolution, which is made very noticeable once the camera zooms in and compares the two versions. Making further use of the new console’s abilities, the redecorating feature of the game will support mouse controls, allowing for greater precision. The new version also allows for more players to be connected at once through online multiplayer.
The rest of the trailer is focused on the free version 3.0 update to the game. The first feature revealed is a hotel, where players can help Kapp’n by constructing guest rooms, earning tickets, and purchasing unique souvenirs. Outside the hotel, Tom Nook will request items for delivery that can be crafted in exchange for additional tickets as well. The update also adds multiple quality-of-life improvements to the game, including an increase to the inventory space and a service from Resetti that allows for quick clean up and collection. Finally, the trailer shows off the special dream world that players are free to roam around and decorate while they sleep. The island offers massive customization options, even allowing the terrain to be dug up and rearranged.
The trailer ends off by mentioning various collaborations, introducing new items and characters into the game. These collaborations include Lego, The Legend of Zelda, and Splatoon. Both the free update and the Switch 2 Edition for Animal Crossing: New Horizons will be released on January 15th, 2026.
