Of all the titles that would go onto achieve massive success in the year 2020, the 2018-released Among Us was probably not the one that most people expected. The game has gone onto completely dominating the video game market, with the download rate going through the roof during the COVID-19 Pandemic. Developers InnerSloth, which consists of just four people, by the way, has capitalized on this by announcing a brand new map in 2021 and shadow dropping the game for the Nintendo Switch. However, these statistics pale in comparison with what we just learned. According to Superdata, Among Us had roughly 500 million players in the month of November, that’s half a billion people playing the same game within a four week period.
It’s worth noting that while Among Us has done exceptionally well on Steam, it first started truly blowing up on mobile, which remains the largest platform for the game by far.
First in Brazil and then later in South Korea this Summer. Top streamers helped it go viral. https://t.co/Bf0sbrPQ8V

According to the post, this makes Among Us “by far the most popular game ever in terms of monthly players.” This means that the game had to beat out established stalwarts in the mobile gaming scene, such as Pokemon Go and Candy Crush Saga, which is no easy feat by any means. This insane peak can be attributed to a number of things, but one of the most important factors arguably came in late October when House of Representatives of New York’s 14th Congressional District Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez streamed the game on Twitch in order to encourage people to vote. This attracted a staggering 439,000 views.
Another interesting tidbit that Superdata included was that the PC version of Among Us, which unlike the mobile version has a price of $4.99, raked in most of the revenue, accounting for 64% of the studio’s profit between the month of August and November. This is even more impressive due to the fact that only 3% of the game’s player base is on PC, with the rest playing on mobile. This is a serious testament to the staying power of the game and shows just how popular it really is. We can’t begin to imagine how much these numbers will grow when the new map comes out next year.
