Amid Evil is an Early Access retro-style FPS that will arrive on Steam next week. The developers at Indefatigable created this game as an homage to Hexen and Heretic, which are beloved fantasy shooters of the mid-’90s.
The publishers at New Blood Interactive have revealed an extensive look at the gameplay with a new trailer depicting the “Hordes of Evil” endless mode. Just about every artistic design of this game seems ripped out of the impactful Doom era, from the incredible speed to the first-person perspective and melee mechanics.
The full game will contain seven different episodes, which all show off unique settings, secrets, and enemies. Each episode will be a non-linear adventure paired with an array of cheat codes to further emulate the ’90s feel akin to the golden PC age experience. Amid Evil will be paired with a soundtrack by Andrew Hulshult, who is the composer behind Dusk and Brutal Doom. The Early Access will include three separate episodes taken from the campaign, which include the “Hordes of Evil” mode utilized in the trailer.
One of the most appealing aspects of Amid Evil, apart from the nostalgic aesthetic and impressive mechanics, can be found in its accessibility. It was created using Unreal Engine 4, which prioritizes cutting edge visuals, but is also incredibly well optimized, meaning that it does not require much technical power to run smoothly. This is certainly surmounting to be one of the most fun throwbacks to fantasy FPS in a while, and one that fans of the genre should keep their eye on.
Amid Evil will be available on Steam for $20 on March 12.
