Alan Wake Reaches 4.5 Million in Sales

Nearly half a year after its release, Finnish developer Remedy’s Alan Wake series has achieved an impressive 4.5 million in sales.

The news was announced by Remedy’s CEO, Matias Myllyrinne, via Twitter, in which he wrote” Happy on behalf of the team: Alan Wake franchise is past 4.5m units.”

The figure includes sales from both the original Alan Wake and its non-canon spin-off, Alan Wake’s American Nightmare.

Released exclusively for the Xbox 360 on May 2010 and later on the PC on February 2012, Alan Wake was highly praised for its atmospheric Stephen King-like premise and satisfying gameplay, which made creative use of light and darkness.

It was followed up by two DLC episodes, ‘The Signal’ and ‘The Writer’, as well as a lighter, more action-centric spin-off, American Nightmare, which was initially released on the Xbox Live Arcade and later on the PC.

Remedy have so far held off on working on a full-on sequel to Alan Wake, citing difficulties with securing the right financial backers. In a video message to fans, creative director Sam Lake said:

After the first game, we worked hard to make the sequel happen, but you know these games are huge undertakings and many things need to fall into place, the right partners and the funding […] It would be awesome if we could just create cool stuff and not worry about minor details like money, but we all know that’s not the case.

Nevertheless, he adds that the studio will work on Alan Wake 2 “when the time is right.”

In the meantime, Remedy are working on a brand new IP, Quantum Break, an Xbox One exclusive third person shooter involving time travel that will also include a live-action show interspersed throughout the game.
