Age of Empires: Definitive Edition Gets Open Multiplayer Beta and Release Date

The original Age of Empires, first launched in 1997, has remembered as a classic real-time strategy game, and is still played by many people on the game distribution services GOG and Steam. Fans of the original can rejoice, for the game will be updated and remastered come this February with Age of Empires: Definitive Edition.

The remastering of Age of Empires will come chock-full of new features and updates. The first noticeable change is the overall graphical presentation. Forgotten Empires, the developers of RTS title, have overhauled the graphics by upgrading all assets to support a modern 4K presentation. In addition, the campaign from the original Age of Empires will be present in the Definitive Edition, but it will feature a completely re-recorded soundtrack, and it will feature campaign narration for every campaign in single-player. Core gameplay features, such as attack-moves and the minimap, have been improved, and an in-game tech tree has been added as well.

Age of Empires: Definitive Edition will also come bundled with an advanced campaign and scenario editor, and these creations will easily be shareable via the Age of Empires website. In terms of online play, the title will be playable via Xbox LIVE, and will come equipped with LAN capabilities. These quality-of-life additions are not the end of the rope, and many more small things have been added to the game. If you want to experience these changes for free, Forgotten Empires will be opening up the multiplayer beta to everyone worldwide starting on January 29. To participate, you will need to head over to the beta sign up page and register for the beta. For now, you can still sign up for the closed beta and hope you get an early taste of the game.
