It’s no secret that it isn’t the over the top campaign that keeps players coming back to Call of Duty year after year, it’s the multiplayer. So since most people only play the multiplayer what would happen if Activision cut out the campaign and just sold the multiplayer? Well Activision is trying that out with the Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 – Multiplayer Starter Pack.
According to its Steam page, the starter pack is a slightly restricted version of the traditional multiplayer experience. The starter pack will give players access to ranked matches along with the weapon paint shop, gunsmith, arena, freerun mode, theater, and the black market, all for a $14.99 price point. Along with the campaign, the features players won’t have access to are:
- Zombies game mode
- Ability to play in Multiplayer custom games
- Ability to Prestige (your level will be capped at 55 in the Starter Pack)
- Access to mod tools or modded content (once released)
- Access to unranked server browser (once released)
- Ability to Fresh Start your profile
- The ability to access Dead Ops Arcade II and Nightmares mode
For those who purchase the starter pack and want to upgrade to the full version you will be able to at any point with the $15 cost of the starter pack deducted from the total cost of the game. If you are interested you have until February 29th to pick it up.
As popular as the franchise for fans who are only interested for the mutiplayer, either for competitive or otherwise, that $60 price can seem steep year after year. This starter pack might encourage those who are still playing last year’s entry to upgrade to Black Ops 3. Another possible reason, mention by GameInformer (who also broke the story), is that Activision is trying to bring more people into Black Ops 3 on PC. No matter the reason it will be interesting to see if this multiplayer only version of the game will become a regular option for players and if it will be brought over to consoles as well.
