Nintendo has brought the Mario cast into just about every genre over the years, with one of the most prominently being sports games. Despite the strange combination, these games have captivated fans for years. The Mario Tennis series, in particular, has held a special place in gamers’ hearts since it was released in 2000. As part of the 40th anniversary of the Mario series, Nintendo is bringing the characters back to the sport with Mario Tennis Fever, which received a new trailer yesterday.
The trailer begins by introducing the basics, such as the various ways players can hit the ball to trip up opponents. Things get exciting with the introduction of the new Fever Rackets, adding some signature Mario game spice to the tennis experience. Each of the 30 different Fever Rackets has a unique ability to give advantages offensively or defensively. With the rackets comes a surprising new damage system for the game as well, forcing players to keep track of their health so they aren’t knocked out.
Mario Tennis Fever also promises new characters to the series, including Goombas, Nabbit, and Baby Waluigi, a character never seen in the Mario series up until this point. Baby Waluigi is especially relevant given his adult form’s origin with the first ever Mario Tennis game, bringing the character full circle. In addition to new characters and rackets, the game will also introduce new modes that change the flow of the game, such as Pinball and Wonder Court Match. Finally, the game will add another feature from other Mario sports games, an adventure mode. The new mode will take players on a journey complete with unique bosses.
The trailer ends off by confirming four-person multiplayer both in person and online. Players will also be able to use certain Amiibos to unlock cosmetic tennis balls. Mario Tennis Fever will be available for the Switch 2 on February 12th.
