A New Pop-Up Video Game Exhibition In Harlem

The Harlem Gallery of Science, in partnership with Science and Arts Engagement New York and The City College of New York, is hosting a new pop-up exhibition named Video Games: The Great Connector. The exhibition will run from February 3rd to March 30th and will be located at the Harlem School of the Arts, situated on 645 Saint Nicholas Avenue.

The exhibit is a cost-free exploration delving into the dynamics of how young individuals engage with video games, emphasizing their in-game actions rather than the perceived impact of games on them. Its overarching goal is to spotlight the profound ways in which video games serve as a conduit, fostering connections for players with themselves, their communities, and their future aspirations. By underscoring the positive impact of video games, the exhibit invites everyone to delve into this enriching experience and discover its transformative potential.

The City College of New York, a partner in the group, runs the Gaming Pathways program, setting up a bachelor’s degree in digital game design to prepare students for careers in New York City’s rapidly expanding digital gaming industry.

As per their website, Gaming Pathways provides courses in game design, programming, visual design, and production techniques. These courses aim to impart critical skills in development and offer students hands-on experience by collaborating in teams on real digital projects.

The global video game market was valued at $217 billion in 2022. Experts predict that it will continue to grow at rate of 13.4% annually from 2023 to 2030. This growth can be attributed to the increasing popularity of online gaming and the sustained interest of younger generations. Recognizing the future potential of gaming skills, numerous schools are eager to take proactive steps in harnessing this valuable asset.

Witness a community coming together to celebrate the end of an era and embrace the future by opening a new pop-up exhibition. This unique showcase will not only highlight video games, but also offer participatory activities, art stations, selfie opportunities, profiles of contemporary game designers, and many other engaging elements. This multifaceted experience not only celebrates the transition but also provides a new platform for children to get involved and inspired by the dynamic world of the video game industry.
