The process of fishing in video games has earned a controversial status among gamers due to the variance in quality and implementation. When alone, fishing modes tend to earn criticism for feeling tacked on or boring. The new demo trailer for Snap Jaw looks to put these fears to rest by showcasing massive horror monsters and rogue-lite elements along with the central mechanic. Developed by Midey and Carbon, the game will have fishing and water traversal be the main loop keeping players occupied while they are confronted with the post-apocalyptic world around them.
The trailer wastes no time in acquainting viewers with what the game refers to as “colossal mechatronic creatures” as one ambushes the main character while they are making their way across a dock. According to the game’s Steam page, feeding these creatures will serve as the player’s main way of deterring them while they work toward their goal of helping their dog. Along the way, players will gain access to various abilities for their fishing and boat that will make each trip out into the water easier and more fruitful, such as starting with free blueprints or increasing speed through oil spills. If they fail to put together viable skills to feed the monsters, the game promises dire consequences.
The second half of the trailer hints at the large mechanical monsters being tied to angelic beings and the path to restore the main character’s dog. The action picks up from here, introducing massive humanoid figures, scanning probes that players must sneak past, and laser beams that blast into the night sky.
Given how divisive fishing can be in games, Snap Jaw has a lot to prove to get fans to appreciate it. For those interested, the game now has a demo available on Steam where players can begin testing out synergies and delving into the conflict with the massive robotic monsters.
