A game that had been in production for 15 years is more than deserving of a look at. This labor of love that developer Senscape poured their hearts into has gotten even farther than its original release: it is now coming to console.
Asylum was first released on Steam in 2025, where it currently has “very positive” reviews from those who played it. The artists behind this first-person horror experience took inspiration from renowned author H. P. Lovecraft, film production company Hammer Films and the genre of 80s Euro Horror to create a “mind-bending original storyline.”
Asylum places you in the Hanwell Mental Institute, a large and decaying building that makes those who enter it lose their sense of reality. As a former patient who is experiencing strange visions, you’re there to research the history of it, working towards a conclusion that you would not have seen coming. Despite its appearance, the asylum is not empty. You will come across residents whom you can interview with questions you have and patients who are there to serve as mood setters (jumpscarer-ers).
Senscape places an emphasis on the atmosphere and storytelling aspects of this game, saying it’s a strong focus during gameplay. Their hard work is visible once walking through the asylum; it is lifelike while being hallucinatory at the same time. It gives the sense as though you are going insane while being in it.
Working your way through a series of puzzles that fit the macabre setting, you get closer and closer to unraveling the past of this demented institute. This slow-burn style of storytelling rewards your wit and observation after each challenge you complete, ensuring you will always be on the edge of your seat and entertained.
Asylum will be available to play on PlayStation, Switch, and XBOX this winter. However, if you don’t want to wait, it’s currently available on Steam as well.
