2K Celebrates Bioshock’s 15th Anniversary

It’s almost hard to comprehend this but it has now been exactly 15 years since one of the greatest games of all time launched. All the way back in 2007, Ken Levine and 2K Boston, later known as Irrational Games, unleashed the city of Rapture, and with it all of the characters that have become synonymous in the video game community. Bioshock celebrates its 15th Anniversary this year, and publisher 2K has embarked on a social media campaign to encourage the fans to go back to the creepy atmospheric landscape that was the underwater labyrinth and relive their favorite experiences so many years ago.

2K has actually created a long Twitter thread in the post above, and they’ve even replaced their profile picture to that of Rapture’s most famous, or infamous resident, creator and founder Andrew Ryan. It also helps that they’ve also started out the celebration with the franchise’s most well-known line “Would you kindly?” which is the trigger phrase for the player character for commands. Many well-known video game aficionados have posted their reactions to this thread including Geoff Keighly, who merely responded with a simple heart. 2K also points out that this is the very same day that Andrew Ryan announced his plans to construct Rapture all the way back in 1945, which is no mere coincidence that the game’s anniversary falls on the exact same day.

This goes without saying but Bioshock was much more than a video game to a lot of people. It was an experience that took them to places that they never imagined being, along with making decisions that had a lasting impact and created thought-provoking discussions on the philosophy of free will and being able to make a choice. When the game was released in 2007, there was already a decent amount of anticipation behind it, but no one was ready for how huge it would become. It was universally acclaimed and is still held up today as one of the greatest titles in the industry’s history. While we continue to wait for the much anticipated next entry in the series, the original is still worth going back to all these years later.

Alex Levine: I like to write about video games, movies, tv shows, and other types of creatively imaginative alleyways and avenues. Currently assessing how long it will take to complete a new book.
