Sony shared its latest earnings report which revealed that Sony’s console has hit the 100 million sales milestone. Sony’s previous number was 96.8 million but the new report Sony shared revealed that 3.2 million PlayStation 4 consoles were sold during the quarter that ended on June 30, 2019. Senior Analyst at Niko Partners Daniel Ahmad says that this makes the PlayStation 4 the fastest game console to reach the 100 million sales mark.
The new financial report also shared news that digital download sales have passed 50% when means that it looks like people are purchasing digital games more than they purchase the physical copy of a game. While this is great news for Sony, they are also gearing up for the next generation just like Microsoft. At E3 2019, Microsoft revealed the first information about Project Scarlett. Information about the PlayStation 5 has also been revealed, even though the console hasn’t been officially announced yet like Microsoft’s next console.
The most recent information that was revealed about the PlayStation 5 was a new patent that indicates that the next generation will see the removal of loading screens. Another patent also suggests that the PlayStation 5 will allow backwards compatibility. A recent report says that the PlayStation 5 is targeting hardcore gamers with the best performance and big-budget exclusives. Project Scarlett had a lot of specs that were shared at E3 such as GDDR6 RAM, 8K resolution, a new SSD with 40 times the speed of the current Xbox One and more. Microsoft also shared more information about their streaming initiative, Project xCloud which is becoming available in October. While the PlayStation 4 has been very successful, we’ll have to wait and see if the next generation and the things that will make it different can allow the next consoles to surpass others like the PlayStation 4 this generation.
