“Wake up, son. Make your father proud.” Beckoned by Mr. Geppetto, Pinocchio awakes from darkness to pick up its blade. This is from a cutscene in Lies of P‘s announcement trailer. Lies of P revealed a gameplay teaser yesterday, showcasing its combat system and art style. If you are a fan of Dark Souls or Bloodborne, this game might be the next thing you should check on. Lies of P takes the tale of Pinocchio but turns it into a dark, Souls-like story. Players will control Pinocchio to fight its way out of the city of Krat and look for Mr. Geppetto, its creator, to become human.
The combat and visuals are reminiscent of Dark Souls and Bloodborne. The Belle Époque architecture further amplifies the game’s Bloodborne vibe. In the gameplay teaser, the enemies are mostly puppets. In terms of combat, the attack movements and hit feedback look heavy enough to be considered Souls-like. There will also be an array of weapons to match with each player’s playstyle. A lot of players are excited about Pinocchio’s mechanical left arm. Its appearance and gadgets are reminiscent of Sekiro’s prosthetic left hand. The gadgets include a grappling hook that can pull enemies from a distance closer and a flamethrower that can emit flame for at least a few seconds. Pinocchio can also knock down iron gates with its mechanical arm, implying that there may be more uses to this arm than players would expect. Players will even be able to combine different weapons to craft something truly special.
In terms of the ending, there will be multiple “lying quests” throughout the gameplay. “You must always lie to others if you hope to become human.” Depending on how you lie in each quest, the ending will play out differently. Players will need to make decisions carefully.
