After five years of high-octane soccer vehicle action (called “soccar” by its developer), the massively popular sports/vehicle sim Rocket League will be going free-to-play this summer. In their announcement, developer Psyonix revealed not only the change in price but a plethora of other new features and additions. Rocket League will be releasing through the Epic Games Store on PC for free sometime later this summer, and will be removed from the Steam store as well – but players who currently play on Steam or download it before then will still be able to play and update it on Steam.
Psyonix still has veteran players in mind, and will also roll out a series of “Legacy” benefits for those who have played before the update. Players with “Legacy” status will receive all of the past Rocket League DLC cars and cosmetics, a special title displaying when they first played Rocket league, a full collection of over two hundred Common items (which will be upgraded to “Legacy” quality after the update), as well as several Legacy exclusive cosmetics.
The Epic Games Store version of Rocket League will have full cross-platform support, and players who choose to link their console version to their Epic Games Account will be able to use their inventory and rank from that platform on the Epic Games Store version. Psyonix also promises that the free-to-play update will bring new features and content as well as changes to the game’s challenge and tournament modes.
Rocket League’s move to EGS is another in a series of titles that have been released for free through Epic Games, with titles like Borderlands, Civilization 6, and Grand Theft Auto 5 being notable additions in the past. After Epic’s acquisition of Psyonix back in May 2019, it was only a matter of time before Rocket League made the move.
Rocket League is currently $19.99 on Steam, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, and Xbox One, and the free-to-play update will come later this summer, making it free on PC and becoming an Epic Games Exclusive. There’s currently no word on if the game will become free on consoles.
