E3 was originally meant to take place during this time slot but was ultimately canceled due to COVID-19 concerns. With a juggernaut like E3 going down, developers are in need of new resources to showcase their games. Valve is providing a completely digital outlet for them to present what they’ve been working on to players. Developers who would like to have their demos featured at the event have until April 24th to submit their game. Details about the submission process and eligibility can be found on partner.steamgames.com.
The very first Steam Game Festival debuted last December as part of The Game Awards. Demos for titles like The Drifter, System Shock, and Tactical Galactical were made available for 48 hours to players who participated in the event. Industry producer Geoff Keighly spoke about the event via Twitter, saying that the festival would soon make its way to “other platforms.” He insists that the Steam Game Festival: Summer Edition is just “the first preview of what’s coming together.” He doesn’t elaborate on these other platforms or what exactly the future plans are for the event, but he implores gamers to expect changes to come.
