Frontier Development is best known for their simulator games such as the space sim Elite Dangerous and theme park game Planet Coaster along with various other games, now the studio is working on a four entry series based on Formula 1 racing and management after securing the rights. The first entry is expected to come to PC and consoles in 2022 with the start of the Formula 1 racing season, with the other three following until 2025, assuming that the games reach expected financial milestones.
“We are delighted to announce this multi-year license deal with F1. F1 is one of the most popular global sporting franchises in the world, and we believe the combination of the F1 brand together with our extensive experience in management games will deliver fantastic game experiences to a wide and varied audience around the world,” Frontier’s Chief Executive, David Braben said in a statement. “We have achieved great success with our own IP and are proven development and publishing partners for the highest-profile third-party IP. Both original and licensed IP will continue to be important as we grow and nurture our portfolio.”
In addition to Formula 1 license, Frontier Development secured four other publishing deals under their publishing arm Frontier Publishing that was founded in 2019. Frontier Publishing is yet to announce the other deals yet but has claimed that two of them will get a multi-platform release in 2022 as well. Frontier Development is currently working on another large update for Elite Dangerous which expected to bring large fleet carriers and will be extending the jump range routing for all ships. IT is rumored that Elite Dangerous will get the ability of space legs, or the being able to leave the cockpit of ships and to explore the interiors, something the Frontier Development has noted as taking extreme pride in their details.
