Half-Life fans rejoice! A new game in the series has finally been announced! Unfortunately, it’s not the long awaited Half-Life 3 that fans have craved since Half-Life 2 released over fifteen years ago. Instead, the game is titled Half-Life: Alyx, and is being developed for unspecified VR platforms; most likely the Valve Index and possibly others. The announcement of the game came from the official Valve Twitter account, and they also announced that the official reveal of the game will be this Thursday.
We’re excited to unveil Half-Life: Alyx, our flagship VR game, this Thursday at 10am Pacific Time.

The announcement of Half-Life: Alyx comes after rumors began to spread earlier today about the game being revealed at The Game Awards next month. Thus, it looks like Valve decided to take this rumor into their own hands and announce the game and the unveiling later this week today. The name of the game is an obvious nod to Half-Life 2 character Alyx Vance, and it is probably safe to assume this game will follow her instead of series protagonist Gordon Freeman. The rumors also point to the game releasing just a few short months from now in March 2020.
If the rumored release window is correct, that would put an over twelve year gap between entries in the series as Half-Life 2: Episode 2 released as part of The Orange Box all the way back in 2007. Since then, the series has been pretty much on ice. Due to the long hiatus the series has taken and the cliffhanger ending the series left on, the development and existence of Half-Life 3 or a new game in the series has become one of gaming’s biggest memes.
Though nothing concrete is currently known about Half-Life: Alyx, fans won’t have to wait long to see the unveiling of the game. Valve will reveal the game this Thursday at 1 p.m. EST/ 10 a.m. PST.
