Today, Activision and Infinity Ward provided some new details about how crossplay works for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare. During a stream today, Infinity Ward talked about how it works and more info concerning the next Open Beta happening this weekend where crossplay will be functional for everyone to try. Infinity Ward also broke down what’s next for Modern Warfare as it nears launch.
Thursday, September 19 is when the Crossplay Open Beta starts. The Beta runs through the weekend ending on Monday, September 23. Activision has said that “the introduction of crossplay in Modern Warfare when it launches next month on October 25th is only one example of how Call of Duty is uniting the community in the ultimate player playground. We’ll also see the removal of Season Pass along with plans to release free maps and content post-launch. With crossplay, developer Infinity Ward is ensuring players can experience together this badass fun of Call of Duty multiplayer regardless of system. This weekend’s Crossplay Open Beta will provide not only a great opportunity for gamers to have a blast together, but also provide developers important feedback as they polish for worldwide release next month.”

There are a number of things that Infinity Ward shared about crossplay as well as the upcoming Crossplay Beta. One, it is opt in or out. Players can choose to enable crossplay, allowing players to play with friends on all three supported platforms. Secondly, in order to play Modern Warfare, a Call of Duty account is required. The account will be used for crossplay to play with others on different platforms. The account can also be used to create cross-platform friends and parties across all three platforms. Because Modern Warfare will include crossplay, it has been designed to factor play balancing across differences in controller type. This means that while you are matchmaking, the device you use will be taken into account whether it be controller or keyboard & mouse which is available to use on all platforms, not just PC. You can place into a lobby where players will be using both keyboard & mouse and controllers across all three platforms.
The Crossplay Open Beta is not the last thing that will be shown leading up to the release of Modern Warfare. Infinity Ward has revealed that at the end of September, more information about the campaign will be shared. Lastly, during the beginning of October, we will be getting the first look at the revamped Spec Ops mode. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare will be released on October 25, 2019, for the PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
