After the EA Play livestream at E3 2019, EA announced three new upcoming indie games in a press release. EA has partnered up with three indie studios to produce the games: Zoink Studios (Flipping Death and Fe), Hazelight Studios (A Way Out), and Glowmade. Each of the new titles will be published as EA Originals—meaning all profits made by the games will go back to their developers.
Zoink Games is developing Lost in Random, which will feature both action and strategy elements, with a similarly artistic visual style as Zoink’s previous game, Fe. The game will “[explore] the notion of chance and possibility, set within a beautifully dark and vivid world,” according to EA.
Glowmade is working on RustHeart, a co-op sci-fi RPG. The player will take on the role of an explorer who has a handmade robot sidekick to help them navigate the game’s alien multiverse setting. EA describes it as “compelling mix of tactical action-roleplay gameplay, player invention and spray paint.” (It’s not yet clear how the last of those three will come to play.)
Lastly, Hazelight Studios’ game has yet to be announced, aside from the fact that the indie studio is working on a new title under the EA Originals label. What little hint EA did give suggested Hazelight Studios’ game will involve some form of multiplayer or even controlling multiple characters at once, as they described the new title as “a fresh take on the challenges of working together.” This news comes after Hazelight Studios founder Josef Fares confirmed last year he would continue his partnership with EA for the company’s next game.
In the press release, EA executive vice president of strategic growth Matt Bilbey said EA aims to “continue to connect innovative and creatively distinct new games from the best and boldest independent game makers to a global audience of players.” All three games are currently slated for release on PC and console, though EA has yet to specify which games each console will receive, if any.
EA Play focused primarily on large titles during their livestream this year; they unveiled long-awaited Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order gameplay, set to release on PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One on November 15 this year, and Season 2 of Apex Legends.
