To everyone’s surprise Valve has launched a site dedicated to it’s upcoming virtual reality headset dubbed the Valve Index. There have been rumors and speculation that Valve has been up to something in the realm of VR but today it’s officially confirmed that the Valve Index, which has been created without any partnerships unlike the HTC Vive, will be making its way to consumers in May 2019.
The page for the new headset shows off the first official image of the gear. With only the caption “Upgrade your experience.” accompanying it. A couple of features we can take from this teaser image are at least two cameras on the headset itself, and what appears to be an adjustment slider which might be for IPD or other viewing distance adjustments.
Besides for these, there really aren’t any other leads or bits of information about the technological aspects of headset. It has also previously been reported that Valve has been working on its version on its own version of knuckles motion controllers. However, there has been no official confirmation on if these Knuckle controllers will be apart of the Index of not.
Many were on the fence about the validity of these rumors about Valve having a new VR headset in the works due to layoffs within the company supposedly cutting down their VR division. Despite anyone’s previous doubts we now know that the Valve Index is indeed real.
It’s possible that Valve may reveal more information on the headset ahead of its May 2019 release, but only time will tell. In addition to this, it seems as the market for VR is only heating up as Occulus also has announced two new headsets set to release around the same time. The Oculus Rift S and the Oculus Quest aim to rival the Index this Spring as well.
