Will Wright, the creator of such games as Sim City and The Sims, is ready to teach his unique game design approach to the world. He’s teamed up with MasterClass, an education start-up that sells online video classes from people like The Handmaiden’s Tale author Margaret Atwood and musician Carlos Santana, to release 20 video lessons, each clocking in at about 10 to 20 minutes.
Will Wright has a long history of game design over the last 30 years. Whether it’s a massive moneymaker that’s still going today, such as The Sims, or small one-off projects like Sim Ant, he’s had experience with a variety of genres. His classes feature a variety of topics, including game design critiques and practical examinations of different systems.
In an interview with VentureBeat, Will Wright spoke about a variety of topics involving his video classes and his history making them. When asked about who this class is for, he said that it’s broad, but the class is focused on people who are already somewhat in the industry and are serious about going deeper. The kind of people who know a bit of coding, have made a few small games, and understand the mechanical aspects of game design. Will Wright’s classes are for those people ready to take the next step. He adds that even those not in the game design field can learn a lot about things like user psychology and interactive design.
Will Wright may be teaching game design, but that doesn’t mean he’s done with creating new games. He’s working on an interesting mobile project called Proxi, an interesting simulation where you create a world out of memories collected by the titular personal AI. It’s currently slated for release late 2019.
Will Wright’s MasterClass course is available for $90, or a yearly payment of $180 for access to every course.
