For decades the stereotypical perfect family in the United States has been what is referred to as the nuclear family. This family consists of a married couple and their two children, living in a beautiful home where nothing goes array. The wife is a homemaker while the husband goes out and works to provide for her and their children. Often times, this family dynamic is depicted is a 1950s setting, making this a classic American dream that most people are familiar with.
Developer Three-Headed Dog decided to take the nuclear family format and apply realism to it. While the thought of a family functioning like this is good on paper, these have always been real people with their own personalities and faults. No marriage is perfect, and The Great Wife’s Guide is proof of it.
Play as Dolores, a 1950s housewife who has taken more than she should have from her husband. Their toxic marriage can only go on so far before she can’t control the urge to fight back any longer. The pressure of upholding the perfect life of a nuclear family only adds to Dolores’ already stressful life, pushing her to a breaking point.
Every day Dolores works hard to keep her home spotless, have her husband’s laundry done, have her children smiling, and ensure there is always freshly made food available for her family. All of this has to be done daily by the time her husband comes home from work, of course. Everything has to be perfect in her dollhouse of a home.
However, nothing is ever perfect. Her husband is prone to doing less than savory things such as treating her like a slave and having wandering hands with other women. Each instance adds to Dolores’ anger, and there is a meter that reads her mood all throughout the game. The more upset she is, the more irrational she will react.
Your task by controlling Dolores is not to upkeep the picture perfect family she has to outsiders, it’s to get revenge. Plan little mishaps here and there to get her husband caught up in some sort of trouble. Perhaps a little poison in his drink, a tiny “oops” with his car, or an incident at his favorite bar–make it look like an accident and play the innocent widow. “The further the story goes, the clearer it becomes: the perfect housewife is only one of the roles Dolores can play.”
