As featured in yesterday’s Out of Bounds Showcase, Sombras: Negative Frames is a “first person narrative game with a focus on photography and light horror elements” from Enalto Publishing and Maboroshi Games. The game was announced back in May, following the success of Maboroshi Games’ former title, Last Time I Saw You. After releasing the Out of Bounds demo trailer, the development team has officially released a brand new demo to the public, sharing the following statement: “Today, based on your valuable feedback from the private playtest, we’ve released the demo for Sombras: Negative Frames for everyone.”
Self described as a “nostalgic narrative game with light horror elements and an engaging photography system exploring themes of youth, art, mixed identity, and dysfunctional family systems,” Sombras: Negative Frames is experienced through the eyes of Shiomi Alterio, a photography student who has recently moved to a small Japanese town with her dad. After being “engulfed by a dark dimension made of familiar streets, hungry shadows, and a cast of girls that look just like her,” players are tasked with “help[ing] Shiomi return home by taking pictures of unusual sights, surviving unsettling encounters, and reuniting every single fragment of her broken self.”
After spending two months in the playtesting stage, Maboroshi Games has officially ended the playtest in order to help transition Sombras: Negative Frames into a new demo phase. Some changes include visual improvements, UI updates, bug fixes, the addition of collectibles, a beginning cutscene, and a new main menu. It is currently unclear whether or not this demo will continue to be updated ahead of the game’s release on December 3, but for the time being, it will be available both in person as part of the SAGA BCN Games Fest, as well as online via Steam, as the publicity team plans to include the demo as part of the upcoming Steam Next Fest.
