“Chaos spreads across Appalachia” in Bethesda Game Studio’s newest patch for Fallout 76 (2018). Fallout 76 is the ninth game to be released in the Fallout series, despite serving as a prequel, taking place “twenty-five years after the bombs fell” in a “post nuclear America.” The player is given the choice between playing solo, or joining “millions of [other] players as [they] explore, build, quest, and triumph in a massive open-world multiplayer adventure.”
Upon release, Bethesda assured players that the game would come with “years of free updates and map expansions,” and has yet to disappoint so far. The team has released a total of seventy patch updates, twenty eight of which are considered to be major, to date. The newest patch, dubbed “The Slasher,” is the third major drop of 2026 alone.
Bodies strewn across the wasteland, sounds of maniacal laughter echoing throughout the woods, reports of murderers wearing clown masks invading local settlements. There are even rumors that all these actions could mark the return of The Pint-Sized Slasher himself…
The first lines of the official Release Notes tease the addition of a highly anticipated villain from Fallout 3 (2008). Fans are warned to “prepare for a frightful fall as a cult of fanatics’ sow chaos around the Appalachian region. Check in every week for new parts of the story of The Slasher.” As players advance through The Slasher’s story, their chance of actually running into the creature drastically increase, providing them with ample opportunities to “corner the villain behind the grisly spree (or survive being cornered) for the chance at a unique Power Armor set, a new super-sharp Super Slasher weapon, a chance to rest easy that night (though a real Slasher never stays dead forever, right?) and much, much more.”
The Slasher update is native to Xbox Series S, Series X, and PlayStation 5 versions of Fallout 76, though it is currently available for free on every platform the game is offered. This update was launched on September 15, 2026, alongside the game’s 26th season: Beware the Blood Moon and the introduction of Legacy Seasons
