Nvidia has agreed to acquire Hugging Face for approximately $12.93 billion, bringing one of the most prominent open AI development platforms under the control of the company that has become synonymous with AI computing hardware. The transaction, announced on September 3, is expected to close during the first half of 2027, subject to regulatory and other customary conditions. Nvidia says the deal will bring Hugging Face’s platform, models, datasets and AI-development tools closer to its accelerated-computing technology as the company expands its broader AI ecosystem. For developers, however, the acquisition raises an important question: how open will Hugging Face remain under Nvidia ownership?
Hugging Face has become a major hub for AI developers, researchers and creators. Nvidia says the platform now serves more than 18 million users and hosts more than three million models, 500,000 datasets and one million applications. More than 200,000 companies reportedly use the platform. Nvidia has attempted to address concerns about its ownership by emphasizing that Hugging Face will remain open and hardware-agnostic. Developers will continue to be able to use different models, frameworks, cloud providers, inference services and computing platforms, rather than being required to use Nvidia hardware. That pledge matters because Nvidia already has a substantial relationship with Hugging Face. The company describes itself as the platform’s largest contributor, with more than 500 models and 250 open datasets released through Hugging Face. The acquisition therefore represents an expansion of an existing relationship as much as a new entry into the platform.
The deal is also notable because Nvidia had reportedly explored investing $500 million in Hugging Face at a $7 billion valuation before ultimately pursuing an outright acquisition. At the time, Hugging Face was reportedly reluctant to accept an investment that could give Nvidia too much influence over the company. For the games industry, the consequences are likely to be felt primarily through development tools rather than an immediate gaming-specific product. AI models and datasets are increasingly relevant to areas such as coding assistance, localization, procedural content, dialogue systems and other experimental development workflows. By combining Hugging Face’s developer ecosystem with Nvidia’s computing infrastructure, Nvidia will have a considerably broader position across the AI development stack. The acquisition therefore represents more than a $12.9 billion bet on AI. It is also a test of whether an open platform can retain its independence and neutrality after being acquired by one of the industry’s most powerful hardware companies.
