Video game adaptations of popular stories remain extremely prevalent to this day, with the best featuring ways for players to immerse themselves deeper into the world than the previous medium allowed for. This is the case with the upcoming Project Hail Mary: Journey Among the Stars, which promises to give players a look at the world of Project Hail Mary, a book by Andy Weir recently adapted into a film, through a VR lens. In addition to bringing back the setting, premise, and main characters from the original story, the new game also promises to feature original story content by the book’s author.
Recently, Project Hail Mary: Journey Among the Stars received an official gameplay trailer, showing off key elements and characters from the movie along with some of the VR interactions. Given the setting of deep space, players will be able to pick up objects floating around the ship. These objects will also shift within the ship as players control the engine and push the ship forward, which is done through use of joystick near a control panel.
The most identifiable aspects of the book and movie returning for Project Hail Mary: Journey Among the Stars are the two central characters, Grace and Rocky. Players will control Grace while Rocky stays isolated in another part of the ship, communicating during gameplay moments. Both characters will need to work together to repair the ship and protect cargo during gameplay by passing materials and information between one another. The trailer ends on an ominous note as the window leading out of the ship begins to crack, hinting at the new story in store for players.
Project Hail Mary has been incredibly popular both as a book and as a film adaptation. The legacy of the story leaves a perfect opportunity to allow fans to immerse themselves in the world and explore a new narrative.
