Paradox Interactive, the Swedish publisher behind hits such as the Crusader Kings, Hearts of Iron, Europa Universalis, and Victoria franchises, may have had their next game revealed ahead of time, and it’s a bit different from the historical grand-strategy games they’ve worked on previously. Prior to Gamescom 2026, Paradox posted on X a list of games that receiving new updates, and at the bottom rested a mysterious three question marks hinting at a big surprise. This surprise would be revealed ahead of time, as one Reddit user found what appears to be the name of this mysterious game listed in the Paradox Forum’s “Unreleased Game” filter.

The unannounced game was reported to be called “Afterworld”, and more details would emerge about this project following the Reddit post, with another Reddit user finding a Discord server with a description for the game, saying, “Lead a tribe of survivors, rediscover ancient technology, manage wasteland settlements and wage wars of conquest and political struggle in Afterworld, an original post-apocalyptic survival grand strategy game”. This is certainly something new for Paradox, which makes the news all the more exciting. However, some users on the Paradox forum have expressed disappointment with what was hinted for Afterworld, with one saying, “To be honest: I would have liked a more fantasy based setting. But ultimately the quality of a game is decided by mechanics and not by the setting”, and another expressing, “Honestly, post apocalypse is not really a genre that interests me very much. Unless the dev diaries show me something amazing I doubt I’ll be interested in it”. Another user hopes for something that steps outside the realm of Mad Max and Fallout, saying, “I hope we can rebuild a true and diverse civilisation from this setting and not limited to a conquest war game where domination and survival is the final goal. In 2026, we deserve a better vision I think”.
Well the leak turned out to be true, with Paradox officially revealing Afterworld at Gamescom. Despite disappointment from some fans, it can be said that a post-apocalyptic grand strategy game is something new, and what Paradox describes on their website sets up an intiruging premise. “Begin as shelterfolk crawling out of a failing nuclear bunker, or wayward zealots looking for their goddess in the dustlands, or one of several other playable Origins” it says, and makes mention of scraping together food, water, and fuel, all of which will be needed to support your band of survivors.
According to Paradox’s website, the game will be set in North America, featuring procedurally generated resources, tribes, and threats that you will come across as you play the game. Not everyone is happy with the news of the setting, with one Paradox Forum user saying, “It is a big disappointment not having a global setting… How many times have we already seen a post-apocalyptic USA? We could explore post-apocalyptic China, Japan, Europe, Africa, etc. Instead we are getting what? 8 to 16 tribes with slightly different flavors of American post-apocalyptic wastelanders, perhaps?”. While a global setting would certainly be interesting, I feel it is too soon to judge what Afterworld will offer, and given the usage of “North America” in their description, it begs to ask if it will also include locations in Canada and Mexico.
Like other Paradox games, it will utilize a technology tree, this one called “Ideas Tree”, but will be built around what your band manages to find in their exploration. For example, you may come across a river and learn irrigation, or learn about organized religion by encountering another tribe. Through your discoveries and management of resources, you can organize convoys and supply lines, and you will be able to move your band to a new location if your land runs dry, which also means your capital may move across the game.
You will be able negotiate trade with rival tribes, as well as absorb them into your nation or fight them for their resources, and within your own civilization you will be able to manage which resources get allocated to who, who gets to obtain leadership , and what ideals your nation stands for. Across the game, you will have opportunities to encounter “pre-Fall technology”, which can be used to strengthen your nation, but expect other rival tribes to be seeking them out as well. While this technology can bring benefit to your civilization, it can also spell the end of it and send society backwards again according to Paradox.
This game also appears to have antagonists in the form of “the Ancients”, who Paradox describes as ” immortal leaders from before the Fall, kept alive by forgotten technology”. They will apparently have their own ideas of how society should be run and who should rule, putting them into direct conflict with your nation as it grows across North America.
Paradox has a decent track record when it comes to their releases, and as a fan of their games, I’m rather excited to see how they handle uncharted territory such as the post-apocalypse. While myself and others wouldn’t mind something that explores familiar post-apocalyptic tropes, I also think it would be great to have that alongside something new and unexplored with the genre. Funny enough, the Crusader Kings games already have a series of mods that explore a rather unique post-apocalyptic setting, that being After the End, which looks at a ruined North and South America that has reverted to a mostly feudalistic landscape. Perhaps Paradox may take some inspiration from this mod?
